I'm not impressed by blogspot so from now on I'm posting on tumblr and changing my focus a bit.

The E72 has been sold so I'm 100% done with Nokia regardless of the heavily delayed Meego rocking N950/N9. Meego will be awesome some day but not right now.

I still believe Symbian is the best Mobile OS but I need a functional web browser and good UI.

Neither of those will happen so I'm now using IOS and Gingerbread.

Hopefully someone will grow some balls and ship a 7inch dual core Honeycomb tablet with quad band HSPA by July.

My router app was free and bundled into the SGS.

Both devices rock. Lets hope the N9 has 512meg of ram. Otherwise I'll have an Android tablet next year and dropkick the E72.

E51 v E71 v E72 v N900

E51 camera was unusable because of color distortion
E71 camera was OK and macro was perfect
E72 camera takes 5 minutes to snap and macro is dead
N900 camera is beautiful in sunlight

E51 browser crashed every minute so I switched to UCWEB
E71 browser had 20 useless Nokia bookmarks I could not delete. More UCWEB.
E72 browser is fast but forgets bookmarks
N900 browser is a work in progress but really handy for desktop like browsing but flash is useless

E51 email was OK so I bought profimail
E71 email was nice after installing something from betalabs
E72 email is annoying. I only use MfE for google calendar sync. Still love profimail.
N900 email I have not tested on this week's second firmware update

E51 battery was OK because I was not on IRC or twitter back then
E71 battery life was painful because I was on IRC and twitter all day
E72 battery life is better but I dont IRC anymore. MobileWays wont move my WirelessIRC license to a new IMEI
N900 battery life seems nice but I dont have 3G

E51 display was nice but a bit small
E71 display was easier to read
E72 display seems no different than E71
N900 display is beautiful. I'm using it to read most nights

E51 keyboard was OK but the clicks sounding like bangs when on the phone
E71 was the most comfortable keyboard I've used on a mobile. Better than the SU8W.
E72 keyboard is painful only because of the space bar. The torch key takes far to long.
N900 keyboard looks perfect but 3 rows is uncomfortable at times

E51 3G coverage was iffy until ATT lit up 850Mhz
E71 3G and voice where good once I disabled GSM
E72 3G coverage cuts out a lot. Could be ATT.
N900 3G I have not tested.

E51 GPS did have a GPS
E71 GPS locked in a few seconds if you have DATA
E72 GPS can take a minute to lock and it will drop once or twice an hour. Maps Booster helps.
N900 GPS seems a bit weak like the E72

E51, E71 and E72 contacts sync through Zyb. I love syncml
N900 contacts might sync through Google MfE soon.

Some quick notes.

Scrolling is buggy. Sometimes I can use the arrows on the keyboard which helps.

Must build a VM to make debs if you're a long time *nix user ie: no screen or gnu locate. I hope to wrap that

The calender only looks nice. No MfE to sync with Google like on 60.

The audio might cleaner than Apple but that's not saying much.

Audio playback and sound effects skip sometimes but flac ringtones are awesome.

The app selection is limit but with such an amazing browser I'm not worried.

Recently Bureaucrats in the United States are interested in "carrier exclusivity" at the behest of rural cellular association and we see sites like "FreeMyPhone" emerge.

Unfortunately nobody wants to discuss network compatibility or basic infrasturcture problems. Perhaps if more operators wanted better devices they should have used the global standard GSM for their networks. Now instead of rolling out HSPA like Bell and Telus in Canada they're killing themselves with custom firmware, low volume devices and scams like wimax.

The real issue should be competition. If we want better devices we need to give breaks to organizations with the will power and capital to build new standards basted networks.

I understand operators like to pretend like they add some value to the handset or even take part in the design but take one look at the iPhone realize how amazing your device can be when the operator is forbidden to modify a device.

If you need to enforce something forbid Operator firmware and ensure net neutrality for all mobile broadband and let great devices come to your network organically.

I've had to trash a few posts the last couple months but this one is still on my mind.

Why is everyone still sideloading Software and Applications and when will we crush this broken idea 3rd screen must exist in a world of desktop computers. From what I've seen wandering around PRC millions of people may have S60 devices and zero access to a desktop computer.

I'm at a total loss.

Did newegg send me a lemon or is there some firmware issue with the China Mobile branded A1200?

Today I was able to play a podcast through my E71 into a Jawbone without issue.

However we hear a storm of popcorn and static when the A1200 is more than 4 feet from a fully charged headset.

We used a Nokia headset about a year ago on the A1200 but I gave it away as my lovely Hong refused to use the device.

What now?

Reloading E51 after firmware update

Psiloc will not transfer my Xsync license but I can use syncml for SMS backup so there's really no point, short of the cute icon.

These are the commercial apps I've not ported to the E71.

This is my first day on the E71 and I must say I expect nothing short of perfection.

I've copied all the content on the 8GB microSD to my desktop.

Next I'll reformat and start installing applications.

Unfortunately the new E71 firmware will not install on my device So I'll need to keep all my installs on the possibly slower microSD for now.

Two days with Nokia Maps

Day one... I exit the parking lot at home and Nokia Maps tells me to turn left seconds after I've already turned right.... OK. I'll wait for the drive home.

After work I fire up my holux and wait... Nokia Maps cannot get me out of the parking lot.

OK. I'll take care of that and see what happens. I'm routed South on Lawrence. Soon thereafter the guy keeps tell me to "stay right" on straight road. I'm confused now. After I pass the entrance ramp for 280, which backed up for a block, it tells me to Uturn. No thanks. Second test did not go well. When I got home I set Maps to exclude Highways.

Day two... I exit my parking lot at home and turn left, even though the guy told me to turn left the morning of Day One..... then I'm told to U Turn... ok... them I'm told to turn left... which is a target parking lot... no thanks... I turn right and I'm guided in a reasonable manner to the most congested expressway in the area. oops...

Lets see how it does tonight. I'll change the routing option from quickest to shortest and see if it can lead me home today.

Day Zero with Nokia Maps

I saved 4 locations; work Frys, Walgreens and home.

Tuesday morning I'll let nokia lead me to work.

G1, S60 and my impotent operator

For a while I was using the N80 and E51 on a daily basis. With the G1 and possibly E75 on the way I'm wondering if I should return to multiple devices. Despite the frenzy of useless re-blogging of G1 rumors I still wonder what the device will offer.

How much RAM?
A2DP?
Will I be able to open a terminal?
Will I be able to build vpnc and connect to the Cisco 3000 at work?
A jabber or Google talk client?
A podcatcher?
Divx playback?
Will it take minutes to boot like my N80?

Every day tzones will totally fail while voice works fine. This really does not make sense. If EDGE can run at 256kb but I frequently see data coming through at a few K per second there's a serious problem with either their POS proxy setup or data throughput. So if they cant make EDGE work what makes people think HSPA will be bettter?

Should I put the E51 on ATT medianet and totally forget tmob for anything more than minutes?

Will Android come to a modern device like the touch pro on T-Mobile?

It's been over 2 years since T-Mob won the AWS-3 action and I'm not impressed.

I owe these people nothing. They owe me consistent service.

I suppose most people where considering this when we heard of OpenMoko. Why cant I buy a barebones device and put my own platform on top of it?

LIMO and OpenMoko devices are shipping. In two weeks we may see production HTC hardware running a beta quality Android. Linux is on a many routers, wireless access points and the old POS Motorola A1200. When the integration of UIQ, S60 and MOAP-S is finished I want to walk into frys, buy a SGH-i900 with a boot loader and flash my own firmware. Symbian 10, OpenMoko and Android on one device. Why the hell not? People have been cooking Windows Mobile ROMs for HTC devices for years!

This has me wondering. I expect HTC to support firmware updates on the G1. After all it's not even supporting google talk/jabber when it ships. This is looking bad.

no time for a real post so here's a quickie

I switched from a 4GB to 8GB microSDHC this summer. And decided to do my installs on internal memory from now on.

Somehow I've duplicated contacts and bookmark so I wiped my contacts and reconfigured zyb. In the process I lost a few people, but hey I'm stupid. I failed to realize Zyb could remove duplicates. My new habit is to save every person I call and sync to Zyb over wifi immediately.

I've also tried, MobiCal, Funambol, and Mobyko. So far nothing can sync SMS. Is this a nokia bug? Seems my only option is spending money on Psiloc's beautiful Xsync.

I've spent time with QIK, Kyte and flixwagon. I'm sick of having to pay for an SMS every time I install it on a device. I upgrade microSDHC cards. I update firmware. I change devices. I'm not wasting 20cents to give you my free QA.

How many people even bother to install anything on their device? I can sit in any milk tea shop in Cupertino and watch soccermom after soccermom come in with S60 device in hand. It's an incredbile experience. Do you think any of these people will waste their time on an application they cant download from a desktop?

Contract v Prepay OR E71 v Diamond v iPhone 2

I've been wondering why Italy is mostly pre-paid so I looked at my T-mobile plan.

3 lines, 1000 minutes, t-zones on my line, 400 texts on the daughter's line.

After fees and taxes that's about 100$

Well, If I'm on pre-pay 100$ gets me 1000 minutes which is exactly my current
plan.

Now if I pretend I do not have the SMS package and tzones and I'm using 600 to 700 minutes I pay more than pre-paid at 10 cents a minute. On top of that IF sms is only .05 on pre-pay I may actually be able to convert all my lines this August when my 2 year contract expires and spend less. That said if the rumors are true and and the HTC Diamond is coming to T-Mobile with 1700Mhz 3G support all bets are off. If Microsoft continues to subsidize HTC sales I may sign up for a year contract through the Business Unit and pay a lot for a vga smartphone.

But as always there are other factors to consider. The E71 and iPhone 2 could convert my family to the death star network. I should get a ~12% discount on ATT plans through work, but they really jack up the prices of the devices when you get a corp. discount which sucks balls. Being true bastards they will not discount the iPhone plan at all.

I'll skip the E71 speculation for now. If using the E71 means ATT bloating up the firmware and taking a year to qualify the device like the beautiful N75 I'd rather have the Diamond with it's painfully limited software library and shit battery.

btw - There will not be a 200$ iPhone2. No way. It would screw up Touch sales.

N80 v E51

I'm trying to resurrect my N80, become a two device guy and leave my MBP at home.

Management has stated anyone brining devices to work is at risk of property to seizure.

I have hard-reset my N80 and formated the 2GB miniSD.

Yesterday I upgrade the firmware on my E51.

Now I'm trying to understand how I can separate functions between the two.

I'll be using Divx mobile, mobbler, Opera Mobile and ShoZu on the N80. I do not have a SIM in the N80 I'll need wifi to get it online.

The E51 camera is terrible but it's usable for kyte. I'll try to use the E51 for IM, CalSync60, mymobilesite, vox, google maps, and nokia's podcasting for now.

HTC v Danger

I've often wondered why someone like Samsung or Nokia has not picked up HTC. Whoever owns HTC owns the chumps at Microsoft. It's obvious the Danger acquisition was great for the lumbering jackasses but HTC would have cemented enterprise dominance in North America where Windows Mobile serves as something of a email-feature-phone hybrid.

Did Microsoft move Sidekick manufacturing from Sharp to the ailing Motorola because Sharp is building Symbian devices for NTT? If that level of manipulation is legal I believe MS could easily crush Palm with an HTC takeover. What's the holdup?

I'm pleased MS is subsidizing sidekick LX sales through T-Mobile's business unit on a 1 year contract. I can add a line, pay 120 for a year of service and sell the sidekick for 300$. Thanks MS. I will never doubt your wisdom.

Nobody is WOWed by my N80 as the display failed and nobody in the states has any idea what the E51 can do. What to do? I have shown my E51 and SU8W at Mobile Monday, a half dozen people at work, the local coffee shop and I've only had it a couple/few months.

I really need to get back to more serious posts. Between the massive projects at work, my posts to a private R&D blog and my screenshots over at vox it's painful to find the time and place.

I'm honestly amazed how Shozu is nearly perfect in so many ways and a total abomination otherwise. I'm sick of the annoyances and I'll never pollute my S60 devices with this SHIT again.

Why the hell cannot I change my username in the client? I am trying to transition from an fresh install on the E51 to my working configuration on the N80. There's no way for this garbage to change the username. Why the hell do I need to setup my account again when I should simply be able to use my main ShoZu account?

Anyway now it's removed and I'm not wasting any more of my life on that idiotic platform.

There are plenty of S60 applications to learn and research.

My E51 should show up on Tuesday. Unfortunately a certain vendor never shipped the 4GB microSD I ordered a week ago. They never really bothered to tell me why either. OK. Now I have the same part coming from newegg. Shipped on Monday, scheduled to arrive on Thursday. Why a trip from LA to SF takes 4 days is beyond me. So I'm thinking of everything I need to install. I suppose the first thing I need to do is waste half a day on symbian's website so I can sign beta applications like OggPlay with FLAC support. So what's going on my phone first?

I need to buy a second copy of Opera Mobile as well.

I wanted to try a mass installer but without my microSD and a symbian cert I'm doubting this will go over well.

I'm also hoping to track down an A2DP device the size of an ipod shuffle but that's not looking to probable.

Rather than post random bits about mobile services I think are interesting I'll be focusing on the E51 for a while. Unfortunately, thanks to Nokia and macmall/onsale it may be February before the E51 actually shows up at my door despite the fact it was ordered before Christmas. Thanks guys, no really. By the time it shows up 16GB microSD will be on the market. Not sure if I will keep the N80. Suppose it depends on the E51 display .

First. The N810 form factor is perfect. I really wanted a HTC style slider on a little tablet. I will get the N810 when the price drops. 480$ is far to much.

Questions:

How will intel's MID push and the imminent Asus EEE impact Nokia?

Will we see Nokia buy a Zimbra style collaboration company to help push S60 into North American enterprises? VOIP? IM? VPN?

Can we expect a refresh of the overpriced SU-8W?

When will we see a display at 16:9?

Why all the [s40] 7500 prism ads in Beijiing? You'll see more N73 than any other S60 but surprisingly enough you see plenty of N95s and knockoffs around the city. The only N95 ad I saw in two weeks was in the elevator in my condo.

Will the google jaiku acquisition bring Nokia and Google closer?
The S60 google maps mobile is brilliant.

How about something like "Migration Assistant" on the Mac for S60?
